A transportation bill passed in the Florida House last week has divided Miami-Dade County’s transportation board. The county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, or MPO, strategizes spending priorities for federally funded transportation projects. The majority of this 23-member board is made up of the 13 elected county commissioners. But now, a transportation bill sponsored by Miami Rep. Jeanette Núñez plans to whittle down the board to 14 members — in the hopes that this reorganization will make the board more effective. As Miami Beach’s representative on the MPO, Mayor Philip Levine explains why he supports this measure.
