Summer is here and students are putting the books aside – but this leads to a long lasting problem. It’s called ‘Brain Drain’ or ‘Summer Slide’ and it’s a nation-wide problem made worse for lower income students with limited access to books and summer time educational programs. Each school year, teachers end up spending approximately 17% of their time re-teaching what should have been previously learned material; that’s about an hour a day of class time. We get tips on making learning a year-round priority and hear about programs to prevent the ‘Summer Slide’ from Broward County Libraries’ Lisa McClure.
